MACC proposes 12 governance reforms for Terengganu welfare department

Terengganu MACC recommends 12 governance improvements for the state Social Welfare Department to enhance transparency and prevent corruption in aid programmes.

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has presented 12 governance improvement recommendations to the state’s Social Welfare Department concerning management of the Home Repair Assistance programme.

These recommendations stem from the commission’s 2024 Governance Investigation Report on the department’s handling of the BMR process.

Proposed improvements include developing guidelines for BMR management and payments.

The commission also recommended introducing a checklist form for supporting documents and issuing approval notification letters.

Standardising formats for payment instructions and work completion verification were among the other suggestions.

All 12 recommendations were presented by Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid to Terengganu JKM director Mazura Ngah Abd Manan during a Governance Improvement Agreement signing ceremony.

Mazura welcomed the proposals and agreed to take corrective measures to address identified weaknesses.

Hazrul Shazreen said the recommendations aim to ensure more transparent, accountable and standardised financial governance practices. He added they would close gaps that could lead to corruption, misconduct or abuse of power.
