Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praises US President Trump’s role in facilitating Cambodia-Thailand peace agreement during ASEAN Summit
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has expressed gratitude to United States President Donald Trump for his support in achieving a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged Trump’s personal involvement in urging both nations toward a peaceful settlement.
“When I first received your call, urging me to do more in supporting the initiative, and you personally called both Prime Ministers to urge for a speedy peace settlement, I would say thank you,” Anwar stated during the signing ceremony.
He praised Trump’s tenacity and courage while emphasising the global need for leaders who strongly promote peace.
The ceremony witnessed Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet signing the KL Peace Accord.
This historic event occurred alongside the 47th ASEAN Summit currently underway in Kuala Lumpur.
Several Malaysian ministers attended alongside US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ambassador Edgard D Kagan.
Anwar commended both Southeast Asian leaders for their commitment to regional stability.
“You both did a great job. We are delighted to have you as colleagues, as true friends,” he told Anutin and Hun Manet.
He highlighted their understanding of the need to secure peace for their people and maintain ASEAN’s position as a region of peace and prosperity.
The Prime Minister also thanked US officials for facilitating President Trump’s first visit to Malaysia.
Thailand and Cambodia have maintained a long-standing dispute over their 817-kilometre shared border.
Recent military confrontations on July 24 escalated tensions between the neighbouring countries.
Anwar previously hosted a crucial meeting in Putrajaya on July 28 between Hun Manet and then Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
That meeting successfully defused border tensions and prevented further military escalation.
The resulting ceasefire protected thousands of civilians and represented a significant ASEAN achievement.
Malaysia currently chairs ASEAN and hosts the 47th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The summit runs from October 26 until October 28 with participation from all member states. – Bernama
