Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commends Egypt’s role in urging dialogue and a ceasefire in West Asia, reaffirming Malaysia’s support for Palestine and humanitarian access.
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed Malaysia’s appreciation for Egypt’s efforts to de-escalate tensions in West Asia.
In a telephone conversation with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Anwar commended Egypt’s role in urging conflicting parties towards dialogue and an immediate end to violence.
He also conveyed Malaysia’s commitment to elevating bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership level.
During the call, Anwar expressed Malaysia’s deep concern over the ongoing conflict in the region.
He took the opportunity to extend Eid greetings to President El-Sisi.
“On the issue of Palestine, Malaysia supports Egypt’s efforts in assisting Gaza and stresses that any peace initiative must be based on a ceasefire and humanitarian access,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.
The Prime Minister also sought Egypt’s support for a planned 2026 humanitarian aid mission via the Rafah border crossing.
Regional tensions have escalated significantly since late February.
The United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb 28, prompting retaliatory drone and missile strikes from Tehran targeting Israel and neighbouring countries hosting US assets.
This cycle of violence has adversely affected global market stability and the aviation sector.
