MP Hasni Mohammad calls for stronger anti-corruption measures and institutional reforms, including PM term limits and MACC oversight, to restore public trust
KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has called for unwavering commitment to eliminate malpractice and restore integrity within the civil service.
Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad said ongoing corruption cases serve as a stern warning and continue to erode public trust in the administration.
He made these remarks while debating the Motion of Thanks for the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat.
“These cases should not overshadow the contributions of thousands of clean civil servants,” said the Simpang Renggam MP.
He stressed that reform must move beyond rhetoric into measurable action.
Hasni, representing the MADANI Backbenchers Club, welcomed several planned institutional reforms.
He specifically endorsed the proposal to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to two terms.
He also supported the planned separation of the Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor roles.
This move is seen as fundamental for ensuring prosecutorial independence.
The proposed Ombudsman Bill and Freedom of Information Bill were highlighted as significant steps for oversight and transparency.
Hasni suggested all such bills be referred to parliamentary committees for thorough scrutiny.
He voiced support for reforms to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
These include parliamentary oversight in appointing the Chief Commissioner and debating the MACC’s annual report in parliament.
“As decreed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, corruption must be fought on a large scale,” Hasni stated.
He insisted the MACC must investigate swiftly and thoroughly, regardless of a suspect’s rank.
On foreign policy, Hasni said Malaysia should leverage ASEAN’s growing global influence.
He noted the bloc’s population of nearly 700 million and significant collective GDP.
“ASEAN is no longer a peripheral entity but a vital driver,” he added, calling for it to be propelled with fresh ideas and innovation.
