M’sia-India boost green energy and tech ties

Malaysia and India strengthen collaboration in renewable energy, semiconductors and digital innovation, with Petronas and Gentari leading green projects

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and India have acknowledged the significant strides made by Petronias Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and its clean energy arm Gentari in India’s renewable energy and green hydrogen sector.

In a joint statement, Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Narendra Modi highlighted the vast potential for further large-scale solar energy collaboration.

The leaders emphasised leveraging Malaysia’s expertise to drive clean energy solutions and achieve mutual net-zero ambitions.

“Malaysia appreciates India’s initiative in establishing the International Solar Alliance (ISA),” the statement said.

Both leaders also underlined the strategic importance of the semiconductor industry to the global technology landscape.

They stressed the mutual benefit of strengthening bilateral synergy in this critical sector.

The prime ministers commended ongoing cooperation initiatives between key institutions from both nations.

These include partnerships between IIT-Madras Global and the Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia.

Cooperation between the Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association and the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association was also praised.

The leaders applauded the formalisation of the Malaysia–India Digital Council (MIDC).

They recognised its potential as a key platform to advance digital cooperation and foster innovation.

The council will explore collaborative projects in fintech, e-governance, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure.

Anwar and Modi stated the MIDC will serve as a strategic mechanism to strengthen bilateral digital engagement.

It will also support the digital transformation agendas of both Malaysia and India.

The leaders welcomed collaboration between NPCI International Limited and PayNet Malaysia to establish bilateral payment linkages.

They noted this integration will significantly enhance the ease of doing business.

It will also provide seamless, low-cost remittance and payment solutions for tourists, students and small businesses.

This initiative is expected to enable closer economic and people-to-people connectivity between the two countries.
