Anwar pledges RM2 million for Al-Qaradawi Thought Institute

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announces RM2 million government contribution to support research on Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi’s contributions.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced a MADANI Government contribution totaling RM2 million to the Al-Qaradawi Thought Institute to support the development and strengthen research related to the contributions of Sheikh Dr Yusuf Al-Qaradawi.

The Prime Minister made the announcement during the opening ceremony of the Yusuf Al-Qaradawi Thought Seminar and the Al-Qaradawi Thought Institute at Wisma Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) here today.

“I am personally deeply indebted to Al-Qaradawi, whether in terms of ideas, moral support, or friendship built on sincerity. May efforts like this receive blessings, bring benefits, and enlighten the ummah,” he said via a post on X.

Anwar also recalled the story of his early interactions and cooperation with the Islamic scholar during his active years with the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM).

He described Al-Qaradawi as an agent of change or ‘zeitgeist’, a mover or spirit of the times who manifested openness in thought and sought reform when facing contemporary challenges.

“During the rise of Islamic resurgence around the early 80s, Qaradawi sent a treatise to the ABIM leadership emphasising that ABIM should distance itself from hardline stances and maintain wasatiyyah or moderation.

“In my view, this advice was vital amid the rise of fervor and trends of thought that were closed off from receiving differing views back then,” he said.
