The national EE Challenge has saved 1.7 million kWh of energy, equivalent to RM900,841, and avoided 1,316 tonnes of CO₂ emissions since 2014.
PUTRAJAYA: The Energy Efficiency (EE) Challenge programme has achieved significant savings of 1,701,055 kilowatt hours (kWh), equivalent to RM900,841, since its inception in 2014.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this success also prevented the release of 1,316 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere during that period.
“This carbon reduction is equivalent to the growth of more than 54,850 trees over 10 years,” he said at the EE Challenge 2025 prize presentation ceremony.
Fadillah noted the 2025 edition recorded savings of 133,030 kWh, worth RM60,395, more than doubling the previous year’s achievement.
He stated the programme is part of the Malaysia Energy Literacy Program (MELP), a national initiative to create an energy-literate society through education and entertainment-based activities.
The national energy literacy programme will be expanded next year through content integration into the Digital Education Learning Initiative Malaysia (DELIMa) platform under the Ministry of Education.
It will also be expanded through state-level carnivals to give the public hands-on experience with various energy education activities and competitions.
“This step is crucial in shaping an energy-literate society capable of making wise energy usage decisions,” he emphasised.
Fadillah stressed that energy efficiency depends not only on technology but begins with individual attitudes, discipline and awareness, particularly among the younger generation.
He explained that energy-efficient practices are formed through small daily choices like switching off unused lights, avoiding waste and appreciating available resources.
“Energy efficiency, usage discipline and environmental care are part of compassion,” he added.
SMK Hang Kasturi, Melaka was crowned the Most EE School, topping the national secondary school category for fostering energy efficiency culture.
The school won first place, receiving a trophy, RM15,000 cash and an achievement certificate.
SMK (P) Sultan Ibrahim, Johor took second place with RM12,000, while SMK Kerteh, Terengganu placed third with RM10,000. – Bernama
