No ‘sick’ school projects in Selangor, says deputy minister

The Malaysian Senate was told no education projects in Selangor are classified as ‘sick’, with a new secondary school approved for a high-growth area to meet rising student numbers.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Negara was informed that no education development projects in Selangor have been classified as ‘sick projects’.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said a project is categorised as sick when physical work progress is delayed by more than two months or 20% compared to the contract schedule.

He said this in response to a question from Senator Tiew Way Keng regarding monitoring mechanisms for new school projects in rapidly growing areas.

The ministry has implemented several monitoring mechanisms to ensure new school construction and upgrading projects are completed on schedule.

To accommodate increasing student numbers, the construction of a new secondary school has been approved.

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kota Kemuning 2 in Shah Alam was approved under the 13th Malaysia Plan First Rolling Plan 2026.

The project will include 42 classrooms and other standard facilities on a 4.612-hectare site.

Wong explained that preliminary works and integrated site visits have already been carried out.

The Education Works Branch of the Public Works Department was appointed as the programme manager.

On related issues, Wong also addressed measures to protect students from cyber threats.

The ministry, with the Ministry of Digital, has developed the National Cyber Ethics Module for students aged seven to 17.

The module supports the CyberSAFE in Schools programme and covers six key digital topics.

In addition, the ministry is drafting an AI literacy guideline for teachers and students.

The guideline is expected to be finalised in April 2026 and will cover data security and academic integrity.
