Penang probes alleged caning of Year Two pupil

The Penang Education Department is investigating a viral claim that a teacher caned a pupil, causing bruised and swollen fingers.

KEPALA BATAS: The Penang State Education Department is investigating an allegation that a Year Two pupil was caned by a teacher. The incident, which went viral on social media, reportedly left the child’s fingers bruised and swollen.

The case is believed to involve a pupil from a school in Seberang Perai Utara. Director Mohamad Dziauddin Mat Saad said the district education office is conducting a thorough investigation to gather detailed information.

He stated he is still awaiting a full report from the office. A meeting with the child’s next of kin was scheduled for today to obtain further details and provide an explanation of the school’s actions.

“The Penang JPN will study the full report before taking appropriate follow-up action,” he said when contacted. Mohamad Dziauddin added that the pupil involved will also be referred to a guidance and counselling teacher.

The allegation stemmed from a viral Facebook post by a woman. She claimed her son was hit with a wooden ruler for forgetting to complete his homework.

She alleged the ruler struck her son’s fingers, causing them to swell. The boy reportedly complained of pain when he returned home from school.
