Floodwaters breach first floor of Hat Yai hotel where 40 UUM students and lecturers are stranded, with rescue efforts hampered by strong currents.
HAT YAI: Floodwaters have breached the first floor of a hotel where 40 Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) students and lecturers remain stranded.
The worsening flood situation in Hat Yai, Thailand, has left the group trapped at Wangburapa Grand Hotel with limited food supplies.
UUM student Mimi Nadzirah Afiqah Md Suhaimi, 21, reported that rescuers in boats are struggling to reach them due to high and swift currents.
“However, the situation of UUM students and staff is still safe, albeit with limited food resources,” she said via WhatsApp message.
The Malaysian Consulate-General has delivered food supplies, but rations remain limited for sharing among the group.
Yesterday, UUM announced that evacuation operations had been postponed due to continuing heavy rains in Hat Yai.
Coordination between the Consulate-General of Malaysia in Songkhla and local authorities will resume once the rains subside.
The 40 students and lecturers from the Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy have been stranded since November 22.
They were participating in the Thai-MYS Cultural Exchange programme 2025 when the flooding began.
