41 Terengganu villages at risk of flooding from high tide phenomenon

High tides until December 10 threaten 41 villages across 12 river estuaries in Terengganu, with simultaneous rain raising flood risks.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A total of 41 villages located across 12 river estuaries in Terengganu are at risk of flooding due to a high tide phenomenon predicted from today until December 10.

Terengganu State Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) director Ir Osman Abdullah said seawater overflow could flood coastal and estuary villages, especially if rain coincides with the high tide.

In Kuala Terengganu district, at-risk areas are Kampung Kubang Ikan, Kampung Kuala Ibai, Taman Purnama, Kampung Pulau Rusa, Kampung Sekati and Kampung Pulau Ketam.

Kuala Nerus district locations include Kampung Baru Seberang Takir, Kampung Seberang Takir, Kampung Ulu Takir, Kampung Pak Tuyu and Kampung Tanjung Gelam.

Dungun district areas expected to be affected are Kampung Seberang Pintasan, Kampung Teluk Bidara, Kampung Tanjung Jara, Kg Che Lijah, Kampung Alor Makbah and Kampung Bijangga.

Other Dungun villages at risk are Kampung Sungai Buaya, Kampung Sura, Kampung Kuala Paka, Kampung Tebing Tembah, Kampung Pinang Merah and Kampung Durian Mentangau.

In Marang district, the locations are Kampung Rusila, Kampung Rhu Dua, Kampung Rhu Rendang, Kampung Mercang and Kampung Pulau Rusa Baru.

Setiu district locations predicted to be affected are Kampung Gong Batu, Kampung Pengkalan Gelap, Kampung Limau Nipis, Kampung Kuala Setiu, Kampung Fikiri and Kampung Telaga Papan.

Four locations in Kemaman district are also expected to be affected, namely Pulau Skepeng, Pengkalan Cicar Bukit Kuang, Kampung Bakau Tinggi and Kampung Baru Kemasik.

In Besut district, the areas are Kampung Pengkalan Atap, Kampung Teluk Budu, Kampung Pantai and Kampung Nail.

Osman advised residents in the affected areas to stay alert to weather developments and follow authorities’ instructions.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has issued a continuous rain warning at alert level for several states including Terengganu from December 5 to 8. – Bernama
