JPJ Negeri Sembilan cites boredom from jams as a key reason drivers misuse emergency lanes, with 325 notices issued in a recent holiday operation
SEREMBAN: Boredom from being stuck in long traffic jams is a primary reason some drivers misuse highway emergency lanes.
Negeri Sembilan Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf (pic) said other excuses given by motorists include being accustomed to using the lane and wanting to reach their destination faster.
He stated that using the emergency lane not only breaks the law but can also block ambulances, fire engines, and security personnel, endangering lives.
“For this school holiday season, we have been running an operation to prevent emergency lane misuse from 20 December until 11 January,” he told reporters after conducting checks on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) northbound here.
“As of yesterday, 325 notices have been issued to road users found committing offences under Rule 53(1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.”
Offenders can be compounded RM300 or charged in court, with no compromise for any party involved.
Hanif said last year, 2,288 cases of emergency lane misuse were recorded, showing that awareness and compliance levels need to be improved.
The state JPJ will continue enforcement consistently, targeting main routes and high-risk areas.
