Kuala Lumpur City Hall stops slope project, fines contractor and reviews all area works after a mud flood at Jalan Abang Haji Openg
KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has issued an immediate stop-work order following a mud flood incident at Jalan Abang Haji Openg.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said a compound was also imposed on the contractor involved.
She noted that the project is under the National Landscape Department of the Housing and Local Government Ministry and is being implemented by the Public Works Department.
“I visited the site tonight together with the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud,” she said in a statement.
Hannah said DBKL has taken immediate action in light of the emergency situation and the potential risks posed to the safety of nearby residents.
The measures taken include cleaning operations by the Fire and Rescue Department and DBKL.
They also involve the removal of hoarding structures and repairs to the silt trap to control surface water runoff.
She added that DBKL has established an on-site control centre to coordinate operations.
According to Hannah, the mayor has directed all parties involved to attend an urgent meeting to reassess mitigation plans and prevent a recurrence.
“He has also ordered a review on all slope development works in the Bukit Kiara Federal Park area,” she said.
Hannah stressed that DBKL will continue to tighten the regulation of earthworks on slopes.
She emphasised that such works must be carried out in carefully managed phases.
“I also urge JLN and JKR to take immediate mitigation measures to prevent any recurrence,” she said.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said JKR has been instructed to carry out a detailed technical investigation.
This is to determine the actual cause of the flooding incident, which led to the collapse of a retaining wall.
