Flood victims increase in Sabah as conditions improve in Sarawak and Johor

Flood evacuees rise to 1,450 in Sabah but fall in Sarawak and Johor, with 1,783 people still housed in relief centres across three states.

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood victims in temporary relief centres stands at 1,783 across three states this morning.

Flood victim numbers in Sabah have increased slightly to 1,450 people from 512 families.

They are being housed in 10 relief centres, up from 1,429 people from 504 families last night.

The State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said the rise was due to new victims in the Beaufort district.

Beaufort recorded the highest number with 627 people from 211 families across four centres.

Tenom has 563 victims from 210 families, while Kota Belud remains at 260 people from 91 families.

In Sarawak, the number of evacuees has decreased at the SMK Bekenu relief centre in Miri.

It now shelters 308 victims from 99 families, down from 332 people from 109 families yesterday afternoon.

The victims are from several villages in the Bekenu area including Kampung Kawang, Kampung Jenggalas, and Kampung Rambai.

Johor has seen a further reduction in its flood victim count to 25 people from eight families.

This is down from 27 victims from nine families reported yesterday.

State JPBN chairman Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman said the Kampung Batu Badak hall in Segamat remains open.

It has been sheltering victims from Kampung Seberang Batu Badak and Kampung Batu Lima since December 28.

A continuous rain warning has been issued for the Mersing and Kota Tinggi districts.

Sungai Benut at Parit Salleh gate in Pontian is at a warning level of 2.15 metres.

Sungai Muar at Sungai Tekam jetty in Segamat is also at a warning level, reading 3.46 metres.
