Floods spread to Sandakan as evacuee numbers fall in Sarawak and Perak

Flooding in Sabah hits Sandakan district overnight, while Sarawak and Perak see a drop in evacuees at relief centres

KUALA LUMPUR: Flooding in Sabah spread to the Sandakan district last night, while conditions in Sarawak continued to improve.

In Perak, only one family remains at a relief centre as of this morning.

In Sabah, a total of 59 people from 24 families were evacuated to a relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Pertanian.

The State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat confirmed the evacuations in a statement today.

In Sarawak, the number of victims had decreased to 132 people from 61 families as of 8 am today.

This compares to 141 people from 65 families who were evacuated yesterday following floods and landslides.

The victims are at three relief centres in Miri, according to the committee.

Five victims from one family are at the centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Angus.

A further 119 victims from 57 families are at the centre at SK Suai Niah.

Four victims from two families are sheltering at the Dewan Bulan Sabit Merah centre.

In Perak, only one relief centre at Dewan Serbaguna Padang Tembak is still operating.

A family of four from Hilir Perak remains seeking shelter there this morning.

The Malaysian Meteorology Department forecast rain in several Perak districts until 9 am today.

The affected districts are Manjung, Perak Tengah, Hilir Perak, Bagan Datuk and Muallim. – Bernama
