Govt to identify new green spaces in KL monthly

Minister Hannah Yeoh announces a monthly fast-track initiative to protect Kuala Lumpur’s public green areas, with 45 new sites recently gazetted

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is committed to identifying green and open spaces in the Federal Territory on a monthly basis. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Hannah Yeoh said this fast-track approach aims to protect more public areas.

The initiative is driven by a special task force established to expedite the process. Yeoh stated that DBKL is working hard with the Director of Lands and Mines to increase identifications every month.

“This effort will continue every month with more areas being identified for gazetting from time to time,” she said at a press conference. The event was also attended by Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud and other officials.

Yeoh also announced the gazetting of 45 more green and open spaces covering 277,663.90 square metres. This brings the total number of protected areas to 539 locations.

“This area is now secured as public property through the continuous efforts of the Special Task Force,” she said. She added that these gazetted areas can no longer be arbitrarily converted for other purposes.

The move is part of a long-term strategy to make Kuala Lumpur a more sustainable and resilient city. This includes adapting the ‘Sponge City’ concept to address flooding and rising temperatures.

The public can check the full list of gazetted areas through the official portal of the Office of the Director of Lands and Mines. Yeoh added that the Special Task Force would be led by JWP director-general Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain.

The task force involves various key agencies including the Federal Territory Land and Mines Department. Meetings will be held regularly every month to drive the initiative forward.
