Higher Education Ministry directs HELP University to conduct immediate safety checks following an explosion that killed one contractor and injured nine, including students.
PUTRAJAYA: The Higher Education Ministry has instructed HELP University to conduct thorough safety inspections immediately.
This follows an explosion at the university’s Bukit Damansara campus during maintenance of its air conditioning system.
A 24-year-old man working for the contractor company died while receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Nine other victims, including four students, were injured in the blast.
The ministry said the inspections must encompass all campus facilities.
It added that affected areas must be verified safe by authorities before being used again.
The university must also provide welfare support, including medical and psychosocial services, to all victims.
“The ministry stresses its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff at all institutions of higher learning,” it said in a statement.
This commitment is through compliance with safety standards, periodic maintenance and cooperation with related agencies.
The ministry will continue to monitor developments and will not compromise on safety aspects.
Its goal is to ensure a safe and conducive campus environment.
The explosion is believed to have occurred in the air conditioning maintenance area next to the university’s cafeteria.
