Immigration detains 13 foreigners at Selangor Ramadan bazaar

Malaysian immigration authorities detained 13 Indonesians at a Ramadan bazaar in Bandar Baru Bangi for suspected immigration offences.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department detained 13 foreign nationals during a special operation at a Ramadan bazaar in Selangor.

The operation at the Section 13 Ramadan Bazaar in Bandar Baru Bangi screened 720 individuals across 143 stalls yesterday.

Authorities detained six men and seven women of Indonesian nationality, aged between 18 and 40. They are suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963.

“All these foreign nationals have been taken to and detained at the Immigration Detention Depot for investigation and further action,” the department stated in a Facebook post.

The operation followed intelligence and monitoring by the department. Of those screened, 693 were Malaysians, 12 were Indonesian men, 13 were Indonesian women, and two were Bangladeshi men.

The department emphasised that inspections will continue at Ramadan bazaars nationwide throughout the holy month. It warned it will not compromise with foreigners operating businesses illegally or flouting immigration laws.

“Stern action will also be taken against any individual or employer who protects or employs undocumented migrants,” the post added.
