Johor KPDN records 354 festive price scheme offences this year

Johor KPDN reports 354 offences under festive price schemes in 2024, with failure to display pink tags being the most common violation.

JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) recorded 354 offences under the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) across three major festivals this year.

Its director, Lilis Saslinda Pornomo, said the cases involved the Chinese New Year, Aidilfitri and Deepavali celebrations. A total of 1,233 inspections were carried out at retail and wholesale shops during these periods.

The main offence was a failure to display the mandatory pink price tags, which accounted for 343 cases. “The price tags are important to inform consumers that the goods are listed under the price control scheme,” she explained.

Other violations included six cases of not displaying any price tags and five cases of goods being sold above the set control price. The number of compounds issued has not yet been finalised.

Lilis Saslinda noted the 354 cases this year mark a significant increase compared to the 78 cases recorded last year, which included the Christmas period. Enforcement officers conduct daily monitoring operations to ensure trader compliance with business laws.

Meanwhile, the Christmas SHMMP is now in effect in Johor until December 27. The scheme covers nine specific items to help stabilise prices during the festive season.

The listed items are imported Chinese boned lamb, imported Indonesian and Chinese potatoes, imported round cabbage, Chinese carrots, tomatoes, green bell pepper, red chillies, large shallots and large yellow onions. Lilis Saslinda said the scheme is designed to create a win-win situation for both consumers and traders.
