Sinkhole closes side lane on Jalan Kenyalang 1 in Bayan Lepas

A sinkhole measuring 2m by 2m has forced the closure of a side lane on Jalan Kenyalang 1 in Bayan Lepas for six days as investigations begin.

GEORGE TOWN: A side lane on Jalan Kenyalang 1 in Bayan Lepas will be closed for six days starting today following the discovery of a sinkhole.

The Penang Public Works Department (JKR) said the closure will remain in effect until January 25 as a precautionary safety measure.

Road users are advised to cooperate, drive carefully, and follow instructions from authorities.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the sinkhole was detected at 9.30 am.

“The sinkhole measures approximately 2 metres in length and width, with a depth of about 1.7 m,” he told Bernama.

He confirmed the main road is unaffected, with only the side lane closed.

Initial measures include installing plastic barriers to block the road in both directions.

Excavation of the sinkhole is underway to determine the exact cause.
