Johor ramps up flood preparedness with enhanced monitoring

Johor boosts flood readiness with increased monitoring and asset deployment as MetMalaysia forecasts continuous rain and strong winds from December 7.

JOHOR BAHRU: Johor is strengthening its flood preparedness by increasing regular monitoring of low-lying areas and riverbanks.

The state is also deploying assets to strategic locations, according to Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

He said coordination has been conducted with security agencies to ensure swift action can be taken if water levels rise.

This follows weather updates from the Malaysian Meteorological Department warning of continuous rainfall, strong winds and rough seas.

The forecast predicts continuous rain for Segamat, Kluang, Mersing, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Bahru from December 7 to 8.

“Meanwhile, first-category strong winds are anticipated in the eastern waters of Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Tioman and surrounding areas, with wave heights between 2.5 and 3.5 metres,” Onn Hafiz said in a Facebook post.

He urged the public to remain vigilant to weather and sea conditions.

People should avoid recreational activities at beaches and coastal waters and follow directives issued by the authorities.

The public is encouraged to stay informed through the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage and MetMalaysia.
