Kedah consumer group urges stricter enforcement on price tags

CAKE calls for KPDN to ramp up checks as some Alor Setar market traders still fail to display prices, complicating consumer budgeting

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Consumers Association (CAKE) has called on the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to intensify enforcement after finding non-compliance with price tagging rules at a local market.

CAKE president Mohamad Yusrizal Yusoff said monitoring at the Alor Setar Central Market revealed several traders, especially vegetable sellers, were not displaying price tags.

This practice makes it difficult for consumers to compare prices and budget effectively, he told reporters during an inspection.

“Traders should voluntarily comply with the regulations without waiting for enforcement actions,” Mohamad Yusrizal said.

He explained that transparent pricing protects consumer rights and promotes ethical sales.

Mohamad Yusrizal also expressed concern that a handful of traders might exploit the festive periods of Chinese New Year and the approaching Ramadan.

He hopes KPDN will intensify inspections during these times to prevent such practices.

Overall, his team found no sudden price hikes for essential goods and noted that supply remains sufficient.

Mohamad Yusrizal also expressed hope for a smooth Ramadan, with no unexpected price increases at bazaars set to open.
