Sultan Ibrahim fought back tears at the opening of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre, a facility dedicated to his son who died from liver cancer.
JOHOR BAHRU: An emotional moment marked the opening of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre and Hospital in Larkin today.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, was seen fighting back tears while watching a commemorative montage of his late son, Tunku Abdul Jalil Sultan Ibrahim.
The montage reflected moments of joy and affection shared within the Royal family, marking 10 years since his passing from liver cancer.
Tunku Abdul Jalil, the Tunku Laksamana of Johor, died on 5 December 2015 at Sultanah Aminah Hospital at the age of 25.
He had been battling stage four liver cancer since late 2014.
The new cancer centre is located opposite the Sultan Ismail Library in Johor Bahru.
It offers advanced medical facilities including a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) CT scanner and Linear Accelerator.
Services also include Cyclotron, Theranostics and Gene Therapy.
His Majesty arrived at 8.57 am accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah and the Regent of Johor.
Also present were other Johor royal family members and Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
“I hereby officiate the launch of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre,” Sultan Ibrahim proclaimed.
The ceremony began with a speech by the centre’s director, Dr William Chong.
He said the facility is dedicated to serving all segments of society with the highest quality of care.
“We are committed and we pledge to provide advanced medical services for all communities, especially Bangsa Johor,” Dr Chong stated.
He added that the centre will not neglect low-income households and will allocate resources to help all in the state.
The hospital will be equipped with a new cyclotron for the benefit of the public.
Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the launch marks an important milestone.
He noted it strengthens the state’s healthcare sector and boosts medical tourism efforts.
The ceremony also featured the unveiling of the centre’s logo and the signing of an official plaque. – Bernama
