KLIA begins full enforcement of vehicle access management system

KLIA fully enforces VAMS with 10-minute kerbside limit, reducing congestion from 50% to 21% during trial period ahead of peak travel season.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has begun full enforcement of its Vehicle Access Management System following a successful three-month trial.

The system significantly reduced kerbside congestion by changing driver behaviour during the testing period.

Vehicles exceeding the 10-minute limit at drop-off and pick-up lanes dropped dramatically from 50% to just 21%.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the results demonstrate the need for full enforcement.

“Data from the trial shows that kerbside congestion improves when vehicles observe the 10-minute limit,” he said in a statement.

He noted full enforcement at Terminal 1 will ensure orderly access so everyone has fair lane usage.

The timing is particularly crucial ahead of the year-end travel peak and Visit Malaysia Year 2026 preparations.

VAMS uses Licence Plate Recognition technology to log each vehicle’s entry time and calculate duration upon exit.

A 10-minute grace period is provided before penalties from RM10 to RM100 apply based on overstay duration.

Payments can be made via Touch ‘n Go, credit card, or MyDebit accounts.

The targeted enforcement aims to keep lanes clear for passengers and maintain orderly terminal access.

Drivers needing more time can use the Short-Term Car Park offering 15 minutes free parking.

Alternatives include the Long-Term Car Park with 30 minutes free and the designated free KLIA Public Waiting Area. – Bernama
