M. Nasir charity concert at UPSI raises funds for music scholarships

Over 5,500 fans attended M. Nasir’s Pati Drum charity concert at UPSI, raising an estimated RM500,000 for student scholarships and endowments

TANJONG MALIM: More than 5,500 spectators gathered at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) for the Datuk Dr M. Nasir Pati Drum Charity Concert.

The event at the Tuanku Canselor Hall featured 19 of the legend’s iconic songs performed over nearly two hours with contemporary arrangements.

UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said the concert carried a charitable mission to support the university’s educational endowment.

Gross proceeds are estimated at around RM500,000, with approximately RM300,000 expected for the fund to help talented music students.

“The endowment aims to help talented music students continue their studies,” he said.

Md Amin said M. Nasir was chosen due to his excellence and influence in the country’s music world.

“Datuk M. Nasir is a musical genius. His songs are full of meaning, uplifting the culture and dignity of the nation,” he added.

The concert also served as a live learning field for students of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts (FMSP).

Students were involved on stage and behind the scenes in vocal performances, music, drumming, dance and production management.

Md Amin said the event became a platform for industry and university cooperation.

M. Nasir expressed a desire to involve UPSI students in upcoming concerts, providing crucial industry exposure.

“This is what it means that the industry and the university move hand in hand,” Md Amin said.

The audience included attendees from Sarawak, abroad, and representatives of several foreign embassies.

UPSI welcomes further cooperation in organising joint programmes beyond music, including sports, culture and religion.
