Sabah FC manager praises team’s fighting spirit in Malaysia Cup draw

Sabah FC manager Alto Linus hails his team’s commitment after a 2-2 away draw with Melaka FC, setting up a decisive second leg in Kota Kinabalu

SABAH FC interim manager Alto Linus described his team’s 2-2 draw with Melaka FC as a positive result ahead of the Malaysia Cup second leg.

He said the outcome gives his team an advantage as they will host the decisive return match at Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu next Thursday.

“The high commitment given by the players throughout the match deserves to be praised,” Alto told reporters after the match at Hang Jebat Stadium.

He praised the squad for their performance despite facing pressure away from home and dealing with injuries and player shortages.

Melaka FC started strongly, taking the lead in the second minute through Muhammad Shahrel Fikri Md Fauzi.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 37th minute with a goal from Kwangil Pak.

Sabah FC pulled a goal back before halftime through Adjin Mujagic in the 44th minute.

Melaka FC was reduced to 10 men just before the break when Dino Kalesic received a red card.

Fergus Tierney then scored a dramatic 88th-minute equaliser for Sabah FC to secure the draw.

Alto said his team’s combination play and finishing need improvement, especially after gaining a numerical advantage.

He acknowledged they failed to fully capitalise on their chances in the second half.

The manager vowed his team would give their best in the deciding match to advance in the Malaysia Cup.

Meanwhile, Melaka FC head coach E. Elavarasan said playing with 10 men had a big impact on his team’s style.

He described Sabah FC as a quality and experienced side that exploited the situation.

“In football, every mistake is punished and Sabah FC took advantage,” Elavarasan said.

He assessed both teams now have a 50-50 chance of progressing to the next round.

The coach added they will assess player fitness before finalising their lineup for the crucial second leg.
