Both nations agree any future Flight Information Region arrangement must ensure smooth, unhindered air traffic flow for Changi, Seletar, Sabah and Sarawak
SINGAPORE: Malaysia and Singapore have reached a key understanding in their ongoing discussions on the Flight Information Region (FIR).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said both sides agree any future arrangement must ensure smooth and unhindered air traffic movements.
He said Malaysia recognises Singapore’s need for safe and efficient air flow into Changi and Seletar airports.
Malaysia similarly requires free movement of flights to Sabah and Sarawak.
“Whatever the arrangement, it should not frustrate the free movement of air traffic,” Anwar said at a joint press conference with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
He noted sustained engagement at leadership and ministerial levels has driven tangible progress on the long-pending matter.
On maritime boundary issues, Anwar said both nations must work towards an amicable resolution.
He stressed that Malaysia and Singapore should pursue progress even if a full resolution is not immediately possible.
“I’ve told Prime Minister Lawrence, my colleagues in the Cabinet, and the officials that we must work towards an amicable resolution,” he stated.
Anwar reiterated that Malaysia looks forward to continuously strengthening its unique relationship with Singapore.
This includes cooperation in diplomatic, economic, trade, cultural, and educational fields.
He was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and several key ministers.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi were also part of the official delegation. – Bernama
