Malaysia approves 992 solar projects for government buildings, saving RM20 million

PETRA approves 992 NEM GoMEn solar projects totalling 92.3 MW, with 413 operational projects expected to cut government electricity bills by RM20 million yearly.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation has approved 992 solar projects for government buildings with a combined capacity of 92.3 megawatts.

Its minister, through a parliamentary written reply, stated the approvals were granted under the Net Energy Metering GoMEn category as of October 31, 2025.

Of the total approved capacity, 413 projects with 28.85 MW are now operational.

“Based on the total capacity that has come into operation, government buildings are expected to reduce their electricity bills by up to RM20 million per year on a cumulative basis,” the ministry said.

The reply was in response to a question from Datuk Mohd Hatta Md Ramli regarding solar system development in government buildings.

The NEM GoMEn initiative was part of the broader Net Energy Metering 3.0 programme introduced in 2021.

That programme, which ended in 2025, also included the NEM Rakyat and NOVA categories.

PETRA confirmed the NEM 3.0 programme will be succeeded by the new Accelerated Transition Action Programme Solar Rooftop Scheme.

The new ATAP scheme aims to expand opportunities for users to generate renewable energy for their own use in a more cost-neutral manner. – Bernama
