PM Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia supports dialogue over confrontation in the Middle East, urging restraint and serious consideration of Iran’s call for de-escalation
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia stands ready to support any just effort to end hostilities in the Gulf and Middle East through negotiation as the conflict escalates.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this is in line with the principled bipartisan stance taken by the Malaysian Parliament.
He said he greatly welcomes the call from senior leaders in Iran to exercise restraint from further involvement in the ongoing conflict.
“That call needs to be taken seriously and respected. There will always be voices urging for tougher action, but history rarely sides with those who choose confrontation over negotiation when the door to dialogue remains open,” Anwar said in a post on his Facebook page.
He added that exercising restraint requires true courage.
Anwar also voiced concern as several Gulf nations face repeated attacks, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The violence has also spread beyond the Gulf, affecting Azerbaijan, Jordan and Turkey.
Energy facilities, water installations and other critical infrastructure needed by millions for daily life have been impacted.
“World oil and shipping routes pass through these waters. Disruption here carries consequences far beyond this region,” he said.
The Prime Minister therefore called on the international community to act urgently before the conflict claims more lives and drags in more countries.
