Malaysia calls for immediate steps to calm Thai-Cambodian border tensions, stressing adherence to existing ceasefire agreements and dialogue
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has called for immediate measures to de-escalate tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan expressed serious concern over the latest developments in a statement on Monday.
He stressed that regional peace, stability and well-being remain Malaysia’s top priorities.
Malaysia recognised the commitment of both nations through the Ceasefire Agreement on July 28 and subsequent meetings.
Mohamad urged all parties to refer to and abide by Paragraph 7 of that ceasefire agreement.
It states that in the event of an armed conflict, both sides must promptly consult through existing bilateral mechanisms.
This call follows reports of a renewed military flare-up along the border.
International media reported Thailand launched an airstrike after renewed clashes erupted on Monday.
The airstrike on Cambodian positions was believed to be in response to an early morning attack.
“Malaysia believes that through continuous dialogue, constructive diplomatic steps, and respect for existing bilateral mechanisms, peace and stability can be maintained for the region’s mutual interest,” Mohamad said. – Bernama
