MCMC gets 463 public requests to remove false content on the global supply crisis, with Facebook, TikTok and Threads most reported platforms

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received 463 requests from the public to remove false content related to the global supply crisis as of 7 am today.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said all requests have been forwarded to the respective social media platform providers for further action in accordance with existing procedures.

Based on the complaints received, Facebook recorded the highest number with 185 requests, followed by TikTok with 142 and Threads with 131.

“Of the 463 requests, 65 investigation papers have been opened.

“One case has been decided by the Attorney General’s Chambers for prosecution, while five cases have been recommended for compounds, and the rest are still under investigation,” he said at a briefing on the global supply crisis and a post-Cabinet meeting press conference here today.

He said the most frequently reported false content involved fuel prices and toll rates linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

Fahmi, who is also MADANI Government spokesperson, reminded the public to practise the principle of tabayyun (seeking the truth) or verifying information before sharing, especially in sensitive situations that have a direct impact on the economy and public well-being.
