MH370 mystery endures 12 years after disappearance

Twelve years after MH370 vanished, the search continues with no answers, leaving families in hope and aviation with an unsolved puzzle

KUALA LUMPUR: The final words from Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, “Good night, Malaysian Three-Seven-Zero,” were recorded at 1.19 am on March 8, 2014.

No one knew they would be the last communication from the Boeing 777 carrying 239 people before it vanished.

Twelve years later, the aircraft’s disappearance en route to Beijing remains aviation’s greatest unsolved mystery.

The flight departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 12.41 am before losing contact during its handover to Vietnamese air traffic control.

Satellite data later suggested the plane turned back and flew south towards the Indian Ocean.

An extensive multinational search covering over 250,000 square kilometres of seabed has yielded no definitive answers.

Only three pieces of debris, including a wing flaperon found on Réunion Island, have been confirmed as originating from MH370.

Dozens of other suspected fragments have been discovered along Indian Ocean coastlines.

The Malaysian government signed a new search agreement with UK firm Ocean Infinity in April 2025.

Their latest mission in January 2026 covered approximately 7,236 square kilometres but found no significant evidence.

The tragedy prompted global aviation reforms to strengthen aircraft tracking and data sharing.

For the families of the 227 passengers and 12 crew, however, the wait for closure continues without end.

The question of what happened after that final cockpit transmission remains unanswered.

The hope for a resolution endures, even as the mystery of MH370 persists into a second decade.
