Over 1,600 flood evacuees remain in Sarawak relief centres

Flood evacuees in Sarawak remain at 1,603 people across nine relief centres in Serian, Sibu, Bintulu and Sebauh divisions.

KUCHING: The number of flood evacuees in Sarawak remained unchanged this morning, with 1,603 individuals from 498 families still housed in temporary relief centres.

The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee reported the evacuees are spread across nine centres in the Serian, Sibu, Bintulu and Sebauh divisions.

Serian division hosts the highest number of evacuees and centres, according to a committee statement.

A total of 448 people are sheltered at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanah Puteh, with 311 at Dewan Masyarakat Serian.

Another 113 evacuees are at Dewan Ranchan, 57 at Dewan Kampung Slabi Entukuh and 95 at the Indoor Basketball Stadium.

In Sibu, six evacuees are at Dewan SMK Bukit Assek.

The Bintulu Civic Centre is housing 237 people, while in Sebauh, 150 are at Balairaya Sebauh and 186 are at Dewan Sri Kemena, SMK Sebauh.

The latest flooding episode in Sarawak began on Dec 31 last year, inundating several areas around Kuching city following persistent heavy rain.
