Parents must control children’s internet use, says Fahmi

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil urges parents to monitor kids’ online activity to protect them from cybercrime, sharing his own family’s rules

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has called on parents to play a major role in controlling and monitoring their children’s internet use.

He said this is crucial to protect children, especially those under 16, from online data exploitation, fraud and harassment.

“Smartphones, tablets and internet subscriptions are not purchased by children, but by parents,” he said at the launch of Safer Internet Day 2026.

Fahmi stressed that digital devices should not be used as “babysitters” for children.

He advised parents to set safety restrictions and limit usage time, sharing his personal experience with his 13-year-old child.

“I set a time limit. If it’s more than an hour, permission is needed,” he explained.

He said this approach teaches children about limits and moderation without being cruel.

Fahmi also advised parents to ensure internet use does not affect their children’s education.

This year’s Safe Internet Campaign focuses on messages about parental controls and limiting device time.

On broader awareness efforts, Fahmi said 150 individuals have been appointed as community messengers.

They will deliver the latest information on scams and internet safety to their respective communities.
