Malaysia’s immigration department is ready to implement passports with a 10-year validity period, with the start date to be announced by the government
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) is ready to implement changes relating to passport validity of up to 10 years, as provided under the Fees (Passports and Visas) (Amendment) Order 2026 published in the Government Gazette yesterday.
Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the implementation date would be announced by the government soon.
“The implementation date will be announced by the government and we are ready to implement it once it is announced,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
Zakaria said that the department is currently issuing passports with a five-year validity period and would continue to do so, with the public to be given a choice once the new validity period is implemented.
The Fees (Passport and Visa) (Amendment) Order 2026, published in the Government Gazette yesterday, stipulates that the new Malaysian passport with a validity period of up to 10 years, will be issued at RM350, with implementation scheduled for this year.
Individuals aged 60 and above will be charged RM175, while disabled persons aged 18 and above registered under the Persons with Disabilities Act 2008 are entitled to a free passport.
The Government Gazette signed by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar also sets the fee for the first-time replacement of damaged or lost passports for citizens aged 13 to 59 at RM550.
For citizens aged over 60, the fee for the first replacement is RM375, RM675 for the second, and RM1,175 for subsequent replacements.
Meanwhile, disabled persons aged 18 and above and JIM personnel are charged RM200 for the first replacement, RM500 for the second, and RM1,000 for subsequent cases.
Malaysians are currently charged RM200 for passports with a five-year validity period, while senior citizens pay RM100.
