PDRM eases recruitment rules for non-Bumiputera applicants

Malaysia’s police force relaxes physical and academic requirements for non-Bumiputera recruits to better reflect the nation’s diversity.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police has eased several recruitment requirements for non-Bumiputera applicants, including physical and academic criteria.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said the move aims to provide greater opportunities for non-Bumiputeras to join the force.

“This measure aims to provide information and create greater opportunities for participation without compromising the professionalism and integrity of the force,” he told Parliament on Wednesday.

The government encourages more non-Bumiputeras to join the security force so its composition reflects the country’s diverse communities.

Shamsul Anuar stressed that PDRM does not set any specific quota for Bumiputera or non-Bumiputera applicants.

Recruitment is based on merit, academic qualifications, health status, physical fitness and passing the vetting process.

As of August 31, PDRM had 136,503 personnel including 7,581 uniformed officers and civil staff from non-Bumiputera communities.

This represents 5.55% of the entire police force.

The deputy minister emphasised that recruitment and promotion processes in PDRM are free from racial or religious discrimination.

The transparent mechanism includes physical examinations, fitness tests, psychometric assessments, and strict vetting of disciplinary records.

Regarding other uniformed agencies, Shamsul Anuar provided non-Bumiputera recruitment figures since 2023.

The Immigration Department had 553 non-Bumiputera staff among 10,914 positions.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency had 103 non-Bumiputera personnel out of 4,913 total staff.

The Prisons Department reported 440 non-Bumiputera employees among 16,153 positions. – Bernama
