A young man from Sabah who fell at home becomes one of the first beneficiaries under Perkeso’s new 24-hour protection scheme.
KUALA LUMPUR: A young man from Sabah who fell from a staircase at home has become one of the first beneficiaries under the Non-Work-Related Accident Scheme (SKBBK), or LINDUNG 24 Jam, which took effect on June 1.
In a statement today, the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) said that the victim, Arnold Nathanael Lister, 24, qualified for coverage as an active contributor, despite the accident happening outside working hours.
PERKESO added that the approved aid includes full funding for his spinal implant surgery and treatment, plus Temporary Disablement Benefit to replace lost income while he is medically unfit to work.
“The victim, from Penampang, Sabah, is also receiving rehabilitation equipment, including a specialised wheelchair and a urinary drainage bag management device, along with free physiotherapy under our Return To Work (RTW) programme, based on his readiness,” the statement read.
The organisation said the case reflects LINDUNG 24 Jam’s role in protecting workers injured outside the scope of their employment.
PERKESO noted that previously, domestic accident victims often struggled to get financial protection, but the new scheme now covers treatment costs and safeguards the livelihoods of contributors.
On June 6, Arnold slipped while using a staircase to go to the bathroom as his home in Penampang was being renovated.
He suffered a fractured and compressed spine and is now being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kota Kinabalu.
PERKESO reminded employers and workers to keep contributions up to date, so that 24-hour protection is in place for any unforeseen accident.
