Severe erosion at Teluk Batik beach forces ban on swimming and fishing, with 200 metres of coastline damaged by two-metre waves.
LUMUT: Severe erosion has damaged approximately 200 metres of Teluk Batik’s coastline following three days of two-metre waves.
The erosion destroyed coconut and ketapang trees while significantly lowering the beach level.
High tides and continuous heavy rain over 24 hours from Sunday to Monday compounded the damage.
Teluk Batik Management and Tourism Unit supervisor Mazzua Amran confirmed the Manjung Municipal Council president visited the site yesterday evening.
Red flags have been raised around the area by MPM and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force.
All water activities have been banned effective from yesterday.
The prohibition covers swimming, fishing, and picnicking until further notice.
Regular monitoring will occur every two hours with another assessment scheduled for this afternoon.
Mazzua said the area might reopen later this week if weather conditions improve.
The erosion extends from the campsite area to the central plain section.
The central area remains unaffected due to its gentle slope.
However, the far end has lost up to 20 metres of land from the bank to the water’s edge. – Bernama
