Construction on the 4.95km Trans Borneo Highway stretch in Miri from Sungai Baram to ILP Miri will begin Q1 2026, says Works Minister
KUALA LUMPUR: Construction of a 4.95-kilometre stretch of the Trans Borneo Highway project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the stretch covers the Jalan Kuala Baram By-Pass in Miri from Sungai Baram to the Miri Industrial Training Institute.
He told the Dewan Rakyat that the Sarawak Public Works Department is currently in the tendering process for the project.
“The project aims to enhance the road’s infrastructure level and strengthen the land transport network in Sarawak’s northern region,” he said during the question-and-answer session.
Meanwhile, maintenance work on another 9.7km stretch of the highway began on June 1.
This section forms part of the Redline alignment and is implemented by a concessionaire for Federal roads.
“The highway heading towards Kuala Baram was originally a state road, but was later changed to a Federal road given its role as the main link between Malaysia and Brunei,” Nanta explained.
He was responding to a question from Chiew Choon Man regarding government efforts to repair and upgrade the deteriorating Jalan Kuala Baram By-Pass Miri.
For the Redline alignment, the Works Ministry is striving to carry out improvements on deteriorating road structures affected by increasing vehicle numbers, including heavy vehicles.
“Seeing that this road is the main link between the two countries, efforts to upgrade it are vital to ensuring safety, comfort and smooth traffic flow for road users,” he said.
Under Routine Maintenance Work scope, the appointed concessionaire must conduct routine inspection patrols of federal roads at least twice weekly.
“If there are any issues, such as potholes, then remedial action must be taken within 24 hours,” Nanta stated.
He confirmed that the concessionaire would be penalised if action is not taken within that time frame. – Bernama
