Tsunami sirens activated in Sabah after Mindanao quake

Malaysia activates tsunami warning sirens in Sabah coastal areas after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines

KUALA LUMPUR: Tsunami warning sirens have been activated along coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu as a precautionary measure following a powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao, the Philippines, this morning.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the government, through the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and relevant security agencies, is closely monitoring the situation.

“I urge all residents in the affected areas to fully cooperate and immediately comply with any evacuation or safety instructions issued by the authorities to prevent any untoward incidents.

“At the same time, please avoid coastal areas during the specified period for your own safety and that of your families,” he said in a statement today.

Earlier, MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said analysis indicated that tsunami waves of up to 0.4m were expected to hit coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu between 10.30 am and noon today.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 50 kilometres about 97 kilometres south of Koronadal City in the Philippines, was also felt in parts of Sabah, including Tawau, Semporna and surrounding areas.

Arthur said MetMalaysia would continue to monitor developments closely, including any aftershocks and potential tsunami risks, and would provide updates as necessary.

He also advised the public against spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary alarm.

“Let us all pray for the safety and well-being of residents in the affected areas,” he said.
