UPSI presents posthumous degrees to parents of Nurly Shahirah and Fatin Nasrien, two students killed in the June Gerik bus tragedy
TANJONG MALIM: Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris awarded posthumous degrees today to two students who perished in the June Gerik bus crash.
Nurly Shahirah Azman and Fatin Nasrien Fadli were among 15 UPSI students killed in the June 9 tragedy on the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding.
Their parents accepted the scrolls during the university’s 27th convocation ceremony at Tuanku Canselor Hall.
UPSI Chancellor Tuanku Zara Salim presented the degrees to Azman Mohamad and Fadli Abd Rahman.
The Raja Permaisuri of Perak was visibly moved, wiping away tears after the presentation.
A special montage dedicated to the crash victims brought many attendees to tears.
Azman received the Bachelor of Education (Special Education) degree on behalf of his daughter.
“When her name was announced to go on stage, I couldn’t hold back my emotions,” the 63-year-old father said.
“There was pride, sorrow, and happiness all at once.”
He expressed heartbreak at not seeing his daughter walk the stage herself but accepted it as God’s will.
Fadli accepted the Bachelor of Education (Mathematics) degree for his daughter Fatin Nasrien.
He described the degree as the highest recognition for his daughter’s dedication and hard work.
“Our family was overjoyed yet overwhelmed with emotion, recalling all the good memories of her,” Fadli said.
The 50-year-old father noted Fatin Nasrien was the family’s beacon of hope as the eldest of five siblings.
He expressed gratitude for the university’s recognition despite his daughter’s absence.
The convocation ceremony runs from November 11 to 18 with 7,173 students graduating.
This includes 5,160 undergraduates and 2,013 postgraduates across eight sessions. – Bernama
