PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, a towering figure in Sabah politics and long-serving Kinabatangan MP, passed away early today at the age of 66.
The announcement was made by his son, Naim Kurniawan Moktar, on Facebook, who wrote: “It is with great sadness that my father passed away on Dec 5 at 1.46 am.
“We pray that his soul is blessed and placed among the righteous. Al-Fatihah.”
Bung had been admitted to a private hospital intensive care unit the previous afternoon, battling complications from kidney failure and a lung infection, according to Sabah Umno secretary Datuk Jafry Ariffin.
Born on Sept 15, 1959 in Sukau, Kinabatangan, Bung is survived by his wives, Datin Seri Nor Asidah Alimuddin and Datin Seri Zizie Izette Abdul Samad, and seven children.
First elected Kinabatangan MP in 1999, Bung’s political career spanned more than two decades.
He also served as Lamag assemblyman since 2020 and as Sabah Umno liaison committee chairman, leaving a lasting mark on the state’s political landscape.
In the recent 17th Sabah state election, he retained the Lamag seat by a razor-thin majority of 153 votes, underscoring both his enduring influence and the challenges of local politics.
Known for his enduring influence in Sabah politics, Bung’s death marks the end of a career that shaped both state and national political landscapes.
