A 44-year-old man died and another was injured in an explosion at a Bukit Rambai recycling centre during welding work, with the fire department deploying a Hazmat team.
MELAKA: One man was killed and another injured in an explosion during welding work at a waste recycling centre today.
The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department said the 44-year-old victim died at the scene after suffering 90% burns in the 1.30 pm incident at the Bukit Rambai Industrial Park.
A 32-year-old man sustained 5% burns and was taken to Melaka Hospital for treatment.
The department received an emergency call at 1.32 pm and dispatched 11 personnel from the Tangga Batu Fire and Rescue Station.
The team arrived about six minutes later to find an explosion had occurred involving a Cranking Unit (CRU) welding machine during work within the premises.
A Hazmat team was deployed to monitor and control toxic gases, with the commander reporting gas detector readings were low and safe.
The incident did not result in a factory fire and the operation was fully brought under control by 2.27 pm.
