Perak police will monitor 74 high-risk spots during Op Selamat 25, deploying 555 personnel to manage a projected 35% traffic surge on the West Coast Expressway.
TELUK INTAN: Perak police will intensify monitoring at 42 hotspots and 32 blackspots to minimise road accidents during Op Selamat 25. The operation coincides with next week’s Chinese New Year celebrations.
Perak Deputy Police Chief DCP Mohammad Azlin Sadari identified several key hotspots. These include Jalan Kuala Kangsar (Ipoh-Butterworth) and Jalan Sultan Iskandar Shah in the city centre.
Other identified hotspots are Jalan Kamunting-Batu Kurau, the Bidor town traffic lights, and the Hutan Melintang Simpang Empat intersection. Blackspots include Jalan Keramat Pulai (Ipoh-Cameron Highlands) and Jalan Pusing-Batu Gajah.

“Six specific traffic offences have been identified as primary contributors to road accidents, including speeding and driving in the emergency lane,” he said. Other offences like overtaking on double lines and running red lights also contribute significantly.
Mohammad Azlin noted that 555 officers and personnel will be deployed for the five-day operation starting this Sunday. He was speaking at the launch of a road safety campaign at the West Coast Expressway Teluk Intan Toll Plaza.
WCE Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Alfred Felix projected a daily traffic surge of approximately 160,000 vehicles. This represents a 35% increase compared to the previous year.
This spike is attributed to school holidays coinciding with the festive season. The expected start of Ramadan also falls at the same time as Chinese New Year.
In view of the surge, WCE has taken a number of proactive measures. These include allocating spare lanes to be activated at major toll plazas including Hutan Melintang and Teluk Intan.
The Traffic Control Centre will operate around the clock with 20 traffic officers and 60 patrol personnel. Staff placement will also be increased with 230 toll attendants stationed daily across 14 toll plazas.
This is a 25% increase in manpower to ensure smooth transactions and reduce congestion.
