Police detain two Thai men, seize 10.6 kg syabu hidden in spare tyre

ALOR SETAR: Kedah police arrested two Thai men and seized 10.6 kilogrammes (kg) of syabu hidden in a spare tyre of a pickup truck at Kampung Baru Balai Pos, Jalan Sungai Korok, Ayer Hitam at 11 pm on Dec 28.

State police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said the suspects’ cunning tactics were uncovered when the police inspected the Toyota Hilux ridden by the two men, leading to the discovery of drugs worth RM349,800.

He said both suspects, aged 25 and 41, initially tried to flee when they realised the presence of the authorities but were successfully apprehended after a scuffle with the police.

“Upon inspection of the vehicle, we found 10 green plastic packets containing clear plastic bags filled with syabu hidden in the spare tyre under the rear of the vehicle.

“All the seized drugs can be used by nearly 20,000 addicts,” he told reporters here today.

Fisol said that the drugs were believed to have been smuggled from neighbouring countries to be distributed to addicts in the state.

The suspects have been remanded for seven days to assist investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and their urine test came back positive for methamphetamine.

Regarding the New Year’s Eve special operation, Fisol said a total of 1,372 vehicles were inspected and 1,055 summonses were issued for various traffic offences, while 223 vehicles were impounded.

Twelve people were also arrested for various offences such as driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and dangerous driving, drug abuse and possession of ketum leaves and juice, he said.–Bernama
