Early voting for the Kinabatangan and Lamag by-elections recorded a 93% turnout, with 176 out of 189 eligible police personnel casting their ballots
KINABATANGAN: A total of 93% of eligible early voters fulfilled their duties for the Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state by-elections.
Election Commission secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said 176 out of 189 police personnel cast their ballots at the Kinabatangan district police headquarters.
The early voting process ran from 8 am to 5 pm using a single polling stream.
Khairul Shahril congratulated the returning officer and election team for their excellent execution of duties.
“Appreciation and thanks are also extended to the Sabah State Secretary’s Office, the Sabah Federal Secretary’s Office, the Royal Malaysia Police, media personnel, and all parties involved directly or indirectly for their cooperation and support given to the EC,” he said in a statement.
The by-elections were triggered by the death of the incumbent for both seats, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, on 5 December last year.
The Kinabatangan parliamentary contest is a three-cornered fight between Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar of Barisan Nasional, Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman of Parti Warisan, and independent candidate Goldam Hamid.
The Lamag state seat features a straight fight between BN’s Mohd Ismail Ayob and Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek.
Polling day for both by-elections is set for Saturday, 24 January.
