Perlis tables record RM359.6 million budget for 2026

Perlis allocates a record RM359.58 million for its 2026 budget, focusing on economic growth, infrastructure, and welfare with a reduced deficit.

KANGAR: The Perlis government has tabled a record RM359.58 million budget for 2026, an increase of RM57.20 million from this year’s allocation.

Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli said this makes it the highest budget in the state’s history.

He stated that RM244.42 million, or 68%, is allocated for operating expenditure, with RM115.16 million, or 32%, set aside for development.

Operating expenditure for 2026 rises by RM48.31 million compared to 2025, with emoluments receiving RM76.79 million and service and supply expenses allocated RM102.14 million.

A further RM51.10 million is for grants and fixed payments, RM12.57 million for assets, and RM1.82 million for other expenses.

For development, RM30.10 million will be financed through federal government loans for infrastructure projects.

The State Secretary’s Office receives the largest share of development funds at RM58.02 million, covering entities like Syarikat Air Perlis and the Kangar Municipal Council.

Other key agencies include the Public Works Department (RM21.67 million), Irrigation and Drainage Department (RM12.75 million), and the Forestry Department (RM12.57 million).

The Agriculture Department is allocated RM6.85 million, while the Veterinary Services Department receives RM3.30 million.

The state government estimates total revenue for 2026 at RM217.59 million, comprising tax revenue of RM44.13 million and non-tax revenue of RM50.92 million.

Non-revenue receipts are projected at RM122.54 million, representing a 77% increase from 2025 estimates.

This revenue projection results in an expected deficit of RM26.83 million for 2026.

Mohd Shukri noted that although a deficit remains, it is the lowest recorded in the past five years.

He urged all tax-collecting agencies to enhance efficiency to increase revenue, prevent leakages, and reduce arrears.

The 2026 budget focuses on three key priorities: sustainable economic growth, sustainable infrastructure development, and the Perlisku Bestari Berkebajikan welfare initiative.

“This budget is designed so that every initiative directly benefits the people,” Mohd Shukri said.

He added that the initiatives are intended to facilitate public services and develop Perlis into a prosperous state. – Bernama
