Polling closes in Kinabatangan, Lamag by-elections, vote counting begins

All polling centres for the Kinabatangan and Lamag by-elections closed at 5.30 pm, with vote tallying underway and results expected by 10 pm.

KINABATANGAN: All 36 polling centres for the Kinabatangan parliamentary by-election closed today, with the final 11 concluding at 5.30 pm.

The last centres to close were SK Buang Sayang, SK Bukit Garam, SMK Bukit Garam, SMK Bukit Garam II, SK Bukit Garam II, SK Kota Kinabatangan, SK Rancangan Suan Lamba, Kampung Gomantong Jaya Multipurpose Hall, SK Paris, SMK Paris and SK Sukau.

Closures were conducted in stages, beginning with SK Inarad and SK Sri Ganda at noon.

Six other polling centres for the Lamag state by-election also closed at 5.30 pm.

Voting proceeded smoothly in good weather with no untoward incidents reported.

A total of 48,526 registered voters were eligible in the Kinabatangan by-election, while 13,703 were registered for the Lamag state seat.

The Election Commission reported a 50.37% turnout in Kinabatangan and 55.16% in Lamag as of 3 pm.

Vote tallying is now underway at Dewan Sri Lamag, with official results expected by 10 pm.

The by-elections involve 1,106 EC staff and 926 police personnel.

The contests were triggered by the death of former incumbent Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin on 5 December last year.

In Kinabatangan, it is a three-cornered fight between Barisan Nasional’s Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar, Warisan’s Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman and independent candidate Goldam Hamid.

The Lamag seat is a straight fight between BN’s Mohd Ismail Ayob and Warisan’s Mazliwati Abdul Malek. – Bernama
