Perlis MB resigns after losing majority support, calling ouster by former allies ‘well-orchestrated betrayal’
PETALING JAYA: Perlis Menteri Besar Shukri Ramli has described his removal from office as an unexpected betrayal, saying he was completely unaware of efforts by fellow Perikatan Nasional lawmakers to force him out.
Speaking at his official residence following his resignation announcement, the Sanglang assemblyman reportedly said the coordinated effort to withdraw support took him by surprise after three years in the top post.
“There was no advance warning whatsoever – it simply occurred,” Shukri told
reporters.
. “I only discovered what was happening when it unfolded, which demonstrates how carefully they orchestrated everything.”
He singled out three former colleagues for particular criticism: Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji) all of whom retracted their backing.
“My error was being overly generous and valuing our camaraderie too highly,” Shukri reflected. “I never anticipated that these relationships would lead to such treatment.”
His departure follows the withdrawal of support by eight PN assemblymen, which included three PAS members who were expelled from the party the previous day.
With only six PAS lawmakers still supporting him in the 15-seat Perlis legislative assembly, Shukri no longer commanded majority backing.
When questioned about rebuilding confidence among PN’s partner parties following the political turmoil, Shukri indicated this matter required discussion at the coalition’s leadership level.
He maintained, however, that his replacement should come from PAS ranks given the party’s position as the largest bloc in the assembly.
The current seat distribution shows PAS with six representatives, Bersatu with five, the three former PAS members, and PKR holding one seat.
