Rafizi stays mum on new party speculation, decision expected by June

Rafizi Ramli addresses speculation over a new political party, stating that discussions are ongoing and a decision will be made by June.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli remained tight-lipped regarding speculation over the formation of a new political party, stating that a final decision will only be reached in June following extensive consultations with his inner circle.

Speaking to reporters after a rally today, the former PKR Deputy President emphasised that the matter requires careful deliberation, as any move would have significant implications for political allies, party structures, and grassroots supporters.

“Any decision I make is not just my decision… it affects many people, from Members of Parliament to party branches,” Rafizi told the media.

He clarified that discussions regarding his political future are ongoing and that he has committed to a period of reflection before making any formal announcement.

“I am taking until June to discuss and consult with friends. So, we wait until June,” he said.

Despite the intense speculation, Rafizi downplayed the allure of political office, insisting that his primary motivation remains systemic reform rather than the pursuit of power.

“I’ve been in Putrajaya; being a minister is nothing. It is not a big deal.

“For me and many of my friends, our goal is simply to see change, to see a better system,” he said.

He added that the central question is how reform efforts can best be sustained, whether within existing frameworks or through new structures.

Earlier, during his address to the crowd, Rafizi noted the diverse political makeup of the rally, which included representatives from various established parties.

In a light-hearted moment, he made a cheeky reference to unregistered political groups, which momentarily piqued the interest of observers.

“Today we gather…all kinds of people are here, all kinds of parties are here. From PKR, DAP, MUDA, PAS, PSM and even ‘unregistered parties’,” he said.

The remark drew significant applause and sparked fresh speculation regarding the potential for a new political vehicle, though Rafizi stopped short of making any formal declaration.
